History
  • The university traces its roots back to Woolwich Polytechnic, Britain’s second polytechnic, opened in 1890.
  • University status awarded in 1992.
Location and Transport
  • The main campus is housed in the Old Royal Naval College in Greenwich, designed by Sir Christopher Wren – only 10 minutes from central London by train.
  • The Avery Hill campus is set in 35 hectares (86 acres) of parkland. Half is set around a Victorian mansion the other includes two new buildings.
  • Medway is a shared campus with the University of Kent and Canterbury Christ Church University, housed in Edwardian listed buildings in Chatham Maritime.

  • A wide range of bursaries is available including Access to Higher Education bursaries, Care Leaver's Bursaries, Mature Student bursaries, Partnership Progression bursaries, Progression bursaries, Academic achievement bursaries.
  • Bursary of £500 a year for home students with UCAS tariff scores in excess of 300 (excluding AS levels), as well as mature full-time student cash bursaries of £500 a year for home students over the age of 25 on 1 September of year of entry, who qualify for means-tested government grants.

      Recent/prospective new builds
      • A new £1.5m laboratory opened in the School of Science at the Medway campus. 
      • Two new buildings were opened in 2006–7 at Avery Hill. Facilities included a multi-purpose sports hall, 220-seat lecture theatre and four clinical skills laboratories.
      • The Pilkington Building at Medway was also opened. It provides improved teaching and catering facilities, alongside expanded student services.
      • A new university café was opened on the Greenwich campus.
      Availability of part-time work
      • University Jobshop offers employment inside and outside the university, as well as work experience and placements.
      • The Greenwich campus is near to the employment opportunities of the Docklands, Greenwich town centre and the new O2 Arena.
