History
  • Originally founded in 1855; Royal Charter Granted in 1955.
  • Establishment of Cornwall Campus in 2004.
  • The Peninsula College of Medicine and Dentistry, a partnership between the Universities of Exeter and Plymouth, took its first students of medicine in October 2002. A new £28-million Peninsula Dental School opened in October 2007.
Location and Transport
  • The university has three campuses: Streatham Campus and St Luke's Campus are in Exeter and the Cornwall Campus is at Penryn near Falmouth.
Accommodation
  • All new students entering Year 1 of an undergraduate programme, who have firmly accepted the offer of a place at the university, who have applied for accommodation by the advertised deadline, will be guaranteed an offer of a place in university accommodation.
  • Almost 1,800 places in catered halls and nearly 2,000 places in self-catered flats and houses.
  • A range of room types and accommodation options to suit all budgets.
  • Average rent in private accommodation in Exeter is around £65–90 per week.

Bursaries: £1,500 for those with income below £25,000; £750 for those with income between £25,001 and £35,000.

Academic achievement Scholarship: Vice Chancellor's Excellence Scholarship £5,000 pa.

  • Tuition fees (2009): £3,225.
  • Placement year and year abroad tuition fee 50% of the full-time tuition fee.
  • Twenty-three per cent of additional fee income earmarked for bursaries.
  • Up to twenty-five Jubilee and Millhayes Science Scholarships worth £2,000-£3,000 a year for students on three and four year science and engineering programmes.
  • Ten Vice-Chancellor's Excellence Scholarships worth £5,000 a year are available for exceptional students who, in addition to academic excellence, demonstrate achievement and continued commitment to at least one of the following areas: volunteering, leadership, entrepreneurship, exceptional talent in music, the arts or sport outside their field of study.
  • Sports scholarships are available for students of outstanding sporting ability who show evidence of achievement or potential at national level. Worth up to £1,000 a year for sporting expenses, sports mentoring/training.

  • The university receives around eight applications for every undergraduate place.
  • The number of under graduate students making Exeter their firm choice rose by 37% for the 2008 entry.
Course flexibility
  • Flexible Combined HonoursThis scheme is available in both Exeter and Cornwall and enables students to combinemodules from a number of different fields of study not otherwise available through an existing Combined Honours programme.
  • Free choice modules. Many programmes include the opportunity to take a 30-credit module outside the main subject of study. For example a foreign language, a leadership module or an IT module.

Teaching standards



  • Exeter has one of the highest National Student Survey rankings in the country and has maintained its top ten position for four years running. In 2008, the university came 4th in the UK amongst 'full service' universities, just behind Loughborough and Cambridge.


Research standards

  • Our total annual government grant for teaching and research rose by nearly 9% for 2009–10: research funding increased by 26%.
  • In 2009 the Arts and Humanities Research Council awarded Exeter 119 postgraduate awards worth over £4.2 million. Exeter is also in the top 15 for awards from the Economic and Social Research Council.
  • Planned investment of  £80 million in science, medicine and engineering over the next three years. 
  • Exeter is leading a £14 million research partnership of South West universities, including Bristol and Bath, to boost research in areas of economic importance to the region.
  • The University of Exeter is a major player in global warming research, with links to the Met Office through three jointly-funded professorships. 


Academic strengths
  • Nearly 90% of Exeter's research was rated as being at internationally recognised levels in the latest (2008) Research Assessment Exercise.
  • Sixteen subjects were ranked in the top 10, with 27 in the top 20 (based on percentage of research categorised as internationally excellent or world leading).
  • Nineteen subjects were ranked in the top 10 in the 2008 National Student Survey: Management, Finance, Accounting and Drama rated number one in the UK; English, Economics, Business, Archaeology, Geology, Human Geography, Classics, Theology, Physics, Sport Science and Medical Technology in the top five.

Student facilities, including Library and Computing


  • In the National Student Survey, Exeter scored in the top ten in every category, including 4th for teaching, 5th for academic support, personal development and organisation and management, and 6th for assessment and feedback. 
  • Exeter’s expenditure on library books, journals and electronic resources is some 35% above the national average in terms of spend per full-time student. There are some 1.2 million books and 1,733 study places in the libraries and 1,000 computer workstations with 24-hour access.

Students’ Union
  • The Students' Guild plays a big part in creating buzz and energy around campus.
  • The Students Guild is one of the most representative unions in the country, with 34% of the student population voting in the 2009 elections, giving Exeter the top Student Union turnout in the UK.
  • The Guild boasts 110 affiliated societies, with over 6,000 members between them. Membership of the Athletic Union reached 5,000 in 2008–9, a significant rise on the previous year. The RAG appeal by the Guild raised £70,000 in 2007–8 with the money donated to ten local charities.

Sport
  • £8 million has been invested in sport. New indoor tennis facilities to LTA standards opened in 2004: Exeter is one of only nine UK universities to have such facilities. In summer 2009 the university will be opening a new £2 million indoor cricket centre on the Streatham Campus. 
  • Exeter was placed 11th in the 2007–8 British Universities and Colleges Sports Association (BUCS).

Recent/prospective new builds
  • The university has invested over £140 million in new buildings and facilities, including new research centres and teaching facilities. 
  • The university is now looking to the future with a planned £450 million investment in campus facilities. This will include a £40 million redevelopment of the centre of the Streatham Campus, £25 million investment in our Business School and £18 million investment in Biosciences.
Availability of part-time work
  • A new employability centre, The Works, opened in October 2005, in partnership with the Students’ Guild, as a ‘one stop shop’ for information on graduate jobs, term time work, project placements with local companies, skills training and volunteering.
