History
  • Edinburgh Napier opened its doors as Napier Technical College in 1964, amalgamating with Napier College of Science & Technology and Edinburgh College of Commerce in 1974, before being awarded university status in 1992. The university name changed from Napier to Edinburgh Napier in February 2009.
  • Merchiston Campus is built around the site of the 13th-century Napier Tower, home of John Napier, the inventor of algorithms.
  • Craiglockhart Campus houses the War Poets Collection, a dedicated exhibition documenting the works of Wilfred Owen and Siegfried Sassoon who met at Craiglockhart campus when it was used as a hospital for the treatment of shell-shocked officers during the First World War.

    • There are no variable tuition fees in Scotland. Fees for 2010–11 have not yet been confirmed. If you are a Scottish-domiciled first degree student you are eligible for your tuition fees to be covered by the Scottish Government. Scottish students should apply to the SAAS to cover this cost. Students from England, Wales and Northern Ireland should apply for a fee loan to Student Finance EnglandStudent Finance Wales, and Student Finance Northern Ireland as appropriate. Students from elsewhere in the EU should contact the SAAS.
    • Tuition fees for non-Scottish domiciled students for 2009–10 have yet to be confirmed but are expected to be £1,820 a year (£2,895 for medicine).
    • The RUK Bursary has been introduced for students normally resident in England, Wales or Northern Ireland only, studying at a Scottish university, who would otherwise have been eligible for a £319 national minimum bursary (i.e. in receipt of full HEMG) had they studied at a university in the rest of the UK. The RUK Bursary is currently worth around £310. To be eligible to apply, Edinburgh Napier students must be in either the first or second year of a full-time undergraduate course and must be in receipt of the full maintenance grant/Welsh Assembly Learning Grant from their local education authority or education and library board.  Please note that students studying on a nursing programme are not eligible to apply.
    • Discretionary Fund. Previously known as the Hardship Fund, this is provided by the Scottish Executive each year to help students who face financial difficulties during their course.  Most Edinburgh Napier students who are from Scotland, England, Wales and Northern Ireland are eligible to apply to the Discretionary Fund in times of financial difficulty. However, students who are studying on a nursing programme are not eligible to apply.
    • Childcare Fund. Edinburgh Napier University does not offer childcare facilities or subsided places at nurseries. However, financial help may be available with the cost of formal, registered childcare. Nursing and Midwifery students and all EU and international students – Edinburgh Napier University can provide grants to cover up to 50% of childcare costs (max. award is £200 per child per month). Full-time Undergraduate and Postgraduate Students (UK only) – Edinburgh Napier University can provide grants to cover up to 80% of childcare costs. All part-time students – help with childcare costs may be available. Please note that all childcare awards are calculated after deduction of any financial support received for childcare from any other source.

        • 54% female, 56% male (full-time undergraduates, 2006–7).
        • 96.1% of Edinburgh Napier's's full-time undergraduate entrants (under 21 years) came from state schools and colleges in 2006–7 (Scottish average for 2006–07 87.6%).
        • In the academic year 2006–07, 97.5% of Edinburgh Napier graduates went into jobs or further study within six months of graduating. Edinburgh Napier was ranked number one for graduate employability in Scotland by the Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA) in 2008. 
          Course flexibility
          • Edinburgh Napier offers flexible learning through full-time, part-time and distance learning options.
          • Edinburgh Napier also offers customised programmes that allow students to build their own personalised programme of study to achieve an award at Postgraduate Certificate, Postgraduate Diploma or Masters Degree level. With the help of an Academic Advisor students can chose from a wide range of modules, set their own pace of study, and build a course to suit personal or professional development.

            Teaching standards

            • In the academic year 2006–07, 97.5% of Edinburgh Napier graduates went into jobs or further study within six months of graduating. Edinburgh Napier was ranked number one for graduate employability in Scotland by HESA in 2008. 
            • In 2006 Edinburgh Napier piloted their ‘Confident Futures’ initiative amongst undergraduate and postgraduate students to develop and enhance the skills and attitude demanded by employers. This is now being rolled out university wide.

              Research standards


                • As the base for the East of Scotland Knowledge Transfer Centre, Edinburgh Napier is ideally placed to develop strong links with businesses of all shapes and sizes.
                • The vibrant research community has a number of areas of strength with an international reputation. These include the Biofuel Research Centre, Transport Research Institute, Employment Research Institute and Centre for Timber Engineering.  
                • Edinburgh Napier (in partnership with ECA) is home to Screen Academy Scotland (one of only seven in the UK) which allows them to offer specialist film education and a focus for research.

                • Fully networked library at each campus including 'in-form' an innovative information skills learning package. 
                Disability services

                  Students’ Union
                  • Edinburgh Napier Students' Association (NSA) produces a  Freshers Handbook and Survival Guide for new students, offers an Independent Student Advice Service (ISAS) and organises student events including Fresher's events and gives students access to a variety of social and sporting clubs.                   • There is also a large Student Senate body who are actively involved in all levels of decision-making and policy within the university.
                  • The NSA has two representatives on the Edinburgh Napier University Court.
                  Sport
                  • New fitness suite at Craiglockhart with qualified staff to provide inductions, health advice and personalised fitness programmes.
                  • Edinburgh Napier works with Edinburgh Leisure to provide subsidised access to a wide range of sport and leisure facilities through the region.

                    Recent/prospective new builds
                    • Edinburgh Napier University is in the latest phase of its £100-m estate strategy which will help achieve its goal of becoming the best modern university in Scotland and one of the finest in the UK.
                    • Craiglockhart Campus re-opened in 2004, combining stunning modern architecture with the historic original 19th-century buildings and offering a great range of facilities including computer suites, language labs and social space.
                    • Sighthill Campus is currently being re-developed, creating a purpose-built facility for the Faculty of Health, Life & Social Sciences. The new, sustainable campus, re-opening in 2010–11, will blend visionary learning spaces with state-of-the-art technology.
                    • Merchiston Campus will undergo a major refurbishment to include a social learning space and modernisation of the exterior.
                    Availability of part-time work
                    • As a very student-centric city, Edinburgh offers plenty of opportunities for part-time employment during term time.
                    • Edinburgh Napier University provides a careers service for students, including 24/7 online access to search for part-time work using the Prospects Net shared vacancy system and a Careers Education Programme which includes help with CVs, applications, aptitude tests and job interviews.
