History
  • Bradford University received its Royal Charter in 1966.
  • Its origins date back to 1832 with the formation of the Mechanics Institute.
  • The first Chancellor was Lord (Harold) Wilson, the then prime minister.


Location and Transport

  • Main campus is near the city centre, the School of Health Studies is a short walk away, and the School of Managementhas its own 5.5-hectare (14-acre campus), 3 km (2 miles) away.
  • Bradford is connected to the national motorway network, has extensive rail links and both Leeds/Bradford and Manchester airports are within reach.
 Accommodation 
  • Approx 1,700 self-catering, single-study rooms in university owned or nominated accommodation, both standard and en-suite.
  • Prices range from £60–69 per week (up to £86 pw ensuite), inclusive of utility bills, and all university owned halls have internet connection and their own telephone connection.
  • Applicants who elect the university as their firm choice will be guaranteed a place for their first year.

    • The University of Bradford Bursary is available to all home and EU students who are eligible for receipt of a Higher Education Maintenance Grant. The maximum bursary, payable to students whose family income is below £40,000 is: Foundation Year: £500; Year 1: £500; Year 2: £700; Year 3: £900. For students in receipt of a partial maintenance grant whose family income is between £40,001–60,032 the bursary is £400, £400, £500 and £600 respectively.
    • The bursary is paid in one instalment in March.

      Teaching standards


      Research standards

      • Bradford has several key areas of world-class research strengths, including Peace Studies, Polymers, Mechanical Engineering, Medical Biosciences (Vascular and Cutaneous Biology and Cancer Therapeutics) and Archaeological Science. The Polymer area is also part of the prestigious, internationally recognised Polymer IRC across Leeds, Bradford, Durham and Sheffield Universities. Peace Studies has, inter alia, a major Rotarians programme.
      • Research is strongly applied. The university has successful Knowledge Transfer centres (some funded by the Regional Development Agency) mapped onto key research strengths in Polymers, Innovative Pharmaceuticals, Telecommunications and Cancer; the university is Customer First accredited.
      • An excellent Research & Knowledge Transfer Support infrastructure and team, with central support for grant bidding, a modern Analytical Centre, a Graduate School for training of PG students, a Research Forum for developing researchers, an annual Research Showcase and a new research conference centre.

      Student facilities, including Library and Computing

      • Over 1,500 computer workstations available across campus.
      • Music centre, art gallery and newly refurbished Theatre on main campus.
      • Main campus library is accessible 24 hours during term time, is set over three floors and contains over 600,000 books and other research material (over 1,100 print and over 5,000 electronic subscriptions).

      Students’ Union 
      • The union has an advice centre, its own cinema, the longest established student radio station in the UK, a 1,300 capacity venue, 3 bars around the campus, over 30 sports clubs and 40 other societies, a volunteering project, a UBUS to provide free, convenient, safe, night-time travel around Bradford.
      • The union launched a safety initiate, SECURITEXT, giving students the ability to immediately contact Security should they require help.
      • Has played host to some top bands, DJs and cheesy acts.

      Sport 
      • Newly refurbished Purpose-built sports centre is in the middle of the main campus with a 100-station fitness suite, weights room, 25m swimming pool, large and small indoor halls, sauna and solarium, dance/aerobics studio, 2 squash courts.
      • Playing fields, artificial turf areasand additional squash courts at two sites, one close to the campus at one of the Halls of Residence, and one in a pleasant area 6.5 km (4 miles) from the campus, within easy reach by public transport.
      • Fifty sports clubs at present and the university is part of the Bradford/Leeds Centre of Cricketing Excellence.

        Recent/prospective new builds 
        • Recent builds include a new state-of-the-art glazed roofed atrium, a social space with computers, meeting rooms and wifi connection.
        • Institute of Cancer Theraputics laboratories building for research and teaching .
        • Norcroft Conference Centre, sustainably designed to accommodate conferences, exhibitions and seminars of up to 250 people.
        • The Hub, a new one-stop-shop student services area containing (among other things) admissions & enrolment, administration and support, information on bursaries, scholarships and accommodation, Students' Union information point.
        • Major redevelopment of student facilities in the Communal building
        • New library at the Management Centre
        • Prospective builds include a compact, urban, sustainable student village of up to 1,000 student study bedrooms on the city centre campus, a new Sustainable Development Centreto provide on-view environmental technologies and teaching laboratories for use by the university and local communities.  Refurbishment of the Student Union Building to create iconic social, learning and meeting spaces.  A new building to house the Faith Exchange and Peace Museum and a major refurbishment of the JBP Library.
          Availability of part-time work 
          • The JobShop helps students find part-time work, on and off campus.
          • All students are paid at least the legal minimum wage (pay depends on type of job applied for).
          • As well as helping students find local employment, the university belongs to a network of similar JobShops in other institutions around the country.
