History
  • 1858 John Ruskin opened a School of Art in Cambridge, laying the foundation for the institution which grew to become Anglia Ruskin University.
  • 1989 The Essex Institute of Higher Education and Cambridgeshire College of Arts & Technology came together to form a polytechnic.
  • 1992 Became a university and changed its name from Anglia Polytechnic University (APU) to Anglia Ruskin in 2005.
Location and Transport
  • The university is based on two campuses – one in the centre of Cambridge and one in Chelmsford.
  • Cambridge is only an hour from London, by train, and can be reached via the M11.
  • Chelmsford offers quick access to London, only 30 minutes by train, and good road connections to the whole of the UK.
Accommodation
  • No official guarantee but in reality the university can accommodate all of Chelmsford applicants and more than 95% of Cambridge applicants (who do not already live in Cambridge).
  • Chelmsford: student village with en-suite rooms in flats of 3–6 (self-catering). £74.90–£83.00 en-suite.
  • Chelmsford: private rentals £55–£90.00 per week
  • Cambridge: modern en-suite and older style halls, along with university owned and leased houses (self-catering). £86.95 en-suite, £60.00–£94.00 non en-suite.
  • Cambridge: private rentals £60.00–£95.00 per week.

    Entry standards
    League Table 
    • Applicants are admitted to the university based on an assessment that they: have the capacity to complete the pathway on which they are to be registered; can achieve the prescribed standard for the award; can satisfy the specific entry requirements for the pathway; places are available on the pathway.
    • Professional courses such as Midwifery, Initial Teacher Training and MSc Town Planning have capped numbers and fill up quickly.
    • Applicants who are unsuccessful when applying for a place on an honours degree may be offered an HND place.

    Tuition fees (2009) £3,225
    • Tuition fee for placement year and year abroad will be half the prevailing tuition fee.
    • Non repayable, non means-tested scholarship to UK and EU undergraduate students who pay the full tuition fee. Worth £500 for each year of course.
    • Eligibility for bursaries to be assessed using UUK/SLC model bursary scheme (HEBSS). 
    • Twelve Foundation Scholarships worth up to £750 are offered each year to students studying at Anglia Ruskin University to assist with a period outside the UK to undertake a study visit in connection with their chosen course. Application form.
    • Awards range from £500 to £1,000 per year, with payments split by semester, and are available in a variety of sports including cricket, rowing, athletics and swimming. Conditions apply.

      • The Research Assessment Exercise 2001 confirmed work of world-class standing in English Literature and Language, awarding a 5 rating.
      • With unambiguous commitment to research, the university has an international research presence in the Sciences, Social Science, Arts and Humanities.
      • Anglia Ruskin staff have been awarded the largest Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) research grant to date in collaboration with two other universities.

      • Cambridge. The nearby Kelsey Kerridge Sports Centre accommodates indoor sports requirements. Outdoor sports are catered for at the university’s sports field.
      • Chelmsford. Facilities include the Mildmay Sports Hall and Fitness Suite, and the Sawyers Gym. Nearby are the Riverside Ice and Leisure Centre and the Melbourne Athletic Stadium.

      Recent/prospective new builds
      • Over £60 million has been invested in facilities over the last few years.
      • Chelmsford. In September 2007 the new Faculty of Health & Social Care building will have simulated clinical environments, providing hands-on experience.
      • Cambridge. New Students’ Union with bar, café, restaurant and nightclub. New Music and Arts facilities and a ‘crime-scene’ for Forensic Science.
