History
  • Opened in 1963, one of the sixties generation of universities and part of the 1994 group.
  • The first UK university to offer courses in creative writing, environmental sciences and development studies.
  • New medical school and school of pharmacy (first in the UK for 30 years) both opened in the past six years.
Location and transport
  • Set in 129 hectares (320 acres) of parkland with its own ‘Norfolk Broad’.
  • 15 minutes from the lively centre of historic Norwich, one of the UK’s top ten shopping cities.
  • The cheapest UK city annual bus pass; half-hourly London trains; regular Norwich–Amsterdam/Paris shuttle flights (then the world’s your oyster).
Accommodation
  • A third of the university’s 3,500 rooms are under four years old and most are en-suite.
  • UEA’s oldest residences – the ‘ziggurats’ – are now grade 2 listed buildings and have been recently refurbished.
  • Freshers who live over 19 km (12 miles) away and new international students applying within deadlines are guaranteed rooms.
  • City rents around £56 a week for a room in a shared house.

Student mix
  • 16 women to every 10 men (62% female, 38% male).
  • 12% of students are from overseas.
  • 88.1% of students are from state schools.
  • Overall: an average of six applicants per available place.
  • Nine applicants for every place in Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy, eight per place for English Literature, for example.
Course flexibility
  • The modular degree structure means that students take self-contained units, providing substantial choice.
  • Each degree has compulsory units – but students can also take optional units outside the main subject area.
  • Many courses give the opportunity to study abroad for a period.

    • UEA was rated joint second English mainstream university for student satisfaction in NSS 2008 – a key measure of academic and teaching excellence.
    • The university received the highest ranking in its most recent quality audit.


    Research standards

    • Around 90% of UEA research was rated of international or national excellence in the 2001 Research Assessment Exercise.
    • Environmental Sciences, History and Film Studies were all top-rated 5*.
    • Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Pure Mathematics, Law, Social Work, Philosophy and Art History were all rated 5.

    Sport
    • The £17.5 million Sportspark, opened in 2000, provides excellent and unrivalled sporting facilities, with a £3.9-million extension underway.
    • Indoors: olympic-sized pool, climbing wall, gym, squash courts, martial arts and aerobics studios and the region’s largest sports hall.
    • Outdoors: astroturf football pitches, tennis courts and an athletics track, and 40 acres (16 hectares) of playing fields.

    • Major residences building programme now completed; the 1960s ziggurats have also been refurbished.
    • Second phase of the School of Medicine, Health Policy and Practice has recently been completed.

    • Regeneration of The Square, the social centre piece of the university is currently underway.
    • The construction of Academic Building East, with new lecture and seminar facilities has commenced.
    • Construction of a renewable biomass power generation plant on campus to help reduce its carbon emissions by 34% after two years in operation.
