- City University London was founded in 1894 as the Northampton Institute and was awarded full university status in 1966.
- The university, whose motto is to serve mankind, is committed to leading London in education, research and knowledge transfer for business and the professions, and is renowned for its international focus and the employability of its graduates.
- City University London has one of the highest proportions of international and graduate students of any university in the UK. It successfully combines academic and professional studies: the majority of City students gain a professional, as well as an academic award.
- The university has sites throughout London, with the main campus located at Northampton Square. Academic strengths
- There is a strong focus on postgraduate education with just under half of students on postgraduate courses. A specialist Online Careers Network offers practical help from over 4,000 former students to current students.
- The City Law School is the first University Law School in London to educate students and practitioners at every stage of legal education.
- City has launched the UK's first Graduate School of Journalism, reinforcing the university's position as Europe's leading provider of journalist education.
- The School of Social Sciences includes the centre for Comparative Social Surveys, which coordinates the European Social Survey.
- The School of Informatics at City is at the forefront of international excellence and leadership in education and research for the information and computing professions.
- The School of Engineering and Mathematical Sciences offers a range of industry placements to its students, ensuring they have professional exposure throughout their degree.
- The Saad Centre for Radiography Clinical Skills Education makes City one of the few universities to have a computed tomography (CT) scanner with radiotherapy simulation software.
- The Cass Business School runs the third largest business and management programme in the UK.

- The university opened a Student Centre at Northampton Square in September 2007, where students can go for help and advice on a wide range of topics including housing, financial support, visa and immigration advice, fee payments, course registration and graduation enquiries.

Students’ Union
- In 2008 the Students' Union underwent a £1.5 million refurbishment of its facilities.
- A new venue called Ten Squared provides space for over 160 diners at any time during the day. In the evening the venue makes full use of a sophisticated multi-zone sound and lighting system to deliver a wide variety of events and features a HD multi screen TV system, air-hockey table, table football and pool tables.
- The venue is free for students to book and hosts a wide variety of a small society events and large parties for up to 400 people throughout the year.

- Summer 2007 sees the start of a major building and renewal project at City as the £10-million School of Arts refurbishment takes centre stage.
- A new Student Centre will open this year, providing a host of integrated services. Students will be able to obtain advice on everything from accommodation to financial matters in a state-of-the-art and purpose-built building.
