History 
  • Celebrated 40 years as an independent university in 2007. Founded in 1881 as a college of St Andrews University.
  • Merged with  Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art, Northern College of Education  and Fife and Tayside Schools of Nursing. 
 Location and Transport
  • Dundee's City Campus is a true city centre campus.
  • Ninewells Campus is about a 20-minute walk from the City Campus. 
  • Global air connections via Glasgow, Edinburgh and Aberdeen (around 1 hour by road/rail). Direct flights to London, Birmingham, Belfast.
  • Connection to national rail service from Dundee station, five minutes' walk from the City Campus.
Accommodation
  • Accommodation is guaranteed to all first-year students who apply by the July deadline.
  • 1,600 newly built, en-suite, wi-fi equipped bedrooms in self-catering residences, all either on or close to the main campus.

    Entry standards
    • Most of our courses ask for 240 UCAS points for Level or 300 points for Level 2 entry.
    • Medicine (336–360), Dentistry (360) and Law (264–312) ask for higher points scores.
    • You may need to attend an interview for some of our courses, e.g. medicine, dentistry, education and social work.

      • There are no variable tuition fees in Scotland. Fees for 2010–11 have not yet been confirmed. If you are a Scottish-domiciled first degree student you are eligible for your tuition fees to be covered by the Scottish Government. Scottish students should apply to the SAAS to cover this cost. Students from England, Wales and Northern Ireland should apply for a fee loan to Student Finance EnglandStudent Finance Wales, and Student Finance Northern Ireland as appropriate. Students from elsewhere in the EU should contact the SAAS.
      • Tuition fees for non-Scottish domiciled students for 2009–10 have yet to be confirmed but are expected to be £1,820 a year (£2,895 for medicine).
      • The RUK Bursary has been introduced for students normally resident in England, Wales or Northern Ireland only, studying at a Scottish university, who would otherwise have been eligible for a £319 national minimum bursary (i.e. in receipt of full HEMG) had they studied at a university in the rest of the UK. The RUK Bursary is currently worth around £310.
      • Fees for placement year and year abroad are normally 50% of full-time fee.
      • Chancellor's Scholarships worth £1,000 a year to UK students who enter at Level 2. Scholarship holders will normally receive a maximum of £3,000 over 3 years.

        Student mix 
        • Dundee has the highest number of students-per-head-of-population of any city in Scotland.
        • Men:women ratio is 37:63.
        • There are 6.6 applications per place.
        Course flexibility 
        • Many courses offer the flexibility to choose new subjects and possibly to change your degree specialism in later years.
        • The MA (Hons) allows students to study a range of subjects in Levels 1 and 2.
        • Life Sciences and Engineering follow core curriculums in Level 1, allowing students to change specialism in Level 2. 

          Teaching standards
          • Named top for teaching quality in the UK in 2005 league tables.
          • Since 2002 there has been a 30% rise in UCAS tariff points required for entry to Dundee.

          Research standards
          • Over £80 million in new research grants secured over the last year.
          • Rated the top place to work in Europe by The Scientist magazine. 
          Academic strengths
          • Strong on the professions, e.g. medicine, law, dentistry, architecture, teaching, accountancy and nursing. Has the most graduates into the professions of any Scottish university.
          • Further strengths in Life Sciences and Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design, one of the UK's top art schools.

            Student facilities, including Library and Computing
            • Over 2,600 computer workstations available to students. Much of the campus is wi-fi accessible, including all new residences.
            • The library has recently been given a £6-million extension.
            • The university has one of the most advanced eLearning systems available to students in the UK.

            Students’ Union
            • The union has been consistently voted among the best students' unions in the country.
            • Sited in the heart of the campus, DUSA was completely refurbished in 2004.
            • DUSA hosts over 60 societies and clubs, with a wide ranging sports programme and many other activities.

            Sport
            • Wide range of sports clubs and The Institute of  Sport and Exercise on campus. Water-based sports on the Tay.
            • Campus based facilities include multi-court sports halls, a gymnasium, fitness suite, floodlit tennis courts and a swimming pool.
            • There is a riverside 33-acre sports ground with pavillion, changing accommodation and parking. The complex is being redeveloped with the addition of new all-weather pitches and new changing facilities.

            Recent/prospective new builds
            • £200-million campus redevelopment completed 2008, including:
            • New residences, sports facilities and library extension.
            • New buildings for computing, life sciences and general teaching.
            Availability of part-time work
            • Wide variety of part-time work available through the city. The university's city centre location makes many employers readily accessible.
            • The Careers Service offers a Job Shop to students, giving access to local part-time job opportunities.
