History
  • In October 1884 the University College of North Wales opened with 58 students and 12 members of academic staff.
  • The institution’s new title, University of Wales, Bangor, was formally approved by the Privy Council in 1997, and changed to Bangor University in 2007.
  • In 2006 the University reorganized its 21 academic schools into six new colleges.
Location and Transport
  • In north Wales, situated between Snowdon and the sea.
  • Surveys show that many students choose Bangor because of the small and friendly nature of the university and city.

  • Students from Wales will be eligible for a non-means tested fee grant (£1,890) from the Welsh Assembly Government towards the cost of tuition fees.
  • The Bangor Bursary Scheme aims to provide additional support for those from lower income families. Depending on household income this could be £1,000 or £500 a year for students on full-time undergraduate courses at Bangor University.
  • Start-up bursaries for those entering university from care worth £1,000.
  • As part of the university's drive to support and develop a number of subject areas of regional or national importance, Bangor will be offering subject-specific bursary awards of
  • £500 for those studying courses within the following Academic Schools for 2009 entry: Chemistry, Computer Science, Electronic Engineering, Law and Modern Languages
  • About 40 Merit Scholarships worth up to £3,000 for excellence in the annual entrance scholarships examinations.
  • Excellence Scholarships of £5,000 may be available in specific subject areas. These scholarships, which are non-means tested and payable in the first year only, will be awarded to the UK/EU students coming to Bangor with the highest academic attainment in the relevant subject areas.

    • £14-million postgraduate and executive management development centre.
    • £8-million building is being constructed to house the new Environment Centre Wales.
