History
  • Bournemouth University's origins can be traced to the early 1900s with the foundation of the former Bournemouth Municipal College.
  • The University's modern history began in 1976 with the opening of the Dorset Institute of Higher Education.
  • In 1990, the Dorset Institute was re-designated Bournemouth Polytechnic and later became Bournemouth University in 1992.
    Location and Transport
    • The university lies at the heart of Europe's largest non-industrial conurbation – between the New Forest and Jurassic Coast.
    • The two campuses, in Poole and Bournemouth, are served by excellent dedicated bus services.
    • London is two hours by rail and excellent road links lead to destinations in the South and West. 

    Accommodation
    • The University offers students a wide range of accommodation options which can be viewed online.
    •  New rooms in Corfe House offer panoramic views of Poole Harbour and Sandbanks from the upper floors.
    • More new halls are under construction in Bournemouth opposite the night club, the Old Fire Station.

      • Tuition fees (2009): £3,225
      • Placement year tuition fee will be around £525.
      • Bursary available to Home and EU students (EU students eligible for a maximum of £1,000).
      • Home and EU students studying at most partner institutions are also eligible for a further £500.
      • Scholarship scheme to reward academic and vocational merit and success in sport, music and citizenship, worth up to £1,000, made either 'in kind' or in cash.
      • Awards made on the basis of family income, using the LEA MG as a guide.
      • 27% of additional tuition fee income will be earmarked for bursaries.

      Student mix
      • More than 16,000 students are enrolled on courses across undergraduate, postgraduate and research programmes.
      • More than 1,200 international students representing some 120 countries study at the University.
      • The ratio of females to males is 53:47 amongst the full-time undergraduate population.  

      Course flexibility
      • Bournemouth is committed to developing students as self-motivated, independent, lifelong learners, empowered to make significant contributions in their careers.
      • Part-time undergraduate options are available in several subjects including Business and Management, Sport, Communication and Media and Health.
      • The University has developed unique e-learning opportunities, particularly for the completion of a Foundation Degree in Business and Management. 

        Teaching standards
        • The UK's only Centre for Excellence in Media Practice, and the National Centre for Computer Animation are at the University.
        • Recognised Centres of Excellence in Tourism, the Environment, Postgraduate Medical Research and Education, Executive Education and Forensics.
        • The University achieved the highest grading possible to its quality standards in teaching (Quality Assurance Agency audit 2008). 

          Research standards
          • Since 2006, Bournemouth University has recruited over 150 new academics with active track records in research and enterprise.
          • Releasing Potential – the UK's largest research development scheme for academics – is underway at Bournemouth.
          • Bournemouth University emerged from the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise as the fourth most improved university in the UK for the quality of its research.       
            Academic strengths
            • The Media School is one of only two accredited Skillset Screen and Media Academies in the country.
            • The School of Services Management is recognised as a global leader in Tourism, Leisure, Hospitality and Retail.
            • The School of Health and Social Care leads the South West for nursing, midwifery and social work. 

              Student facilities, including Library and Computing
              • The ‘best large library' in the UK, according to the Society of College, National and University Libraries.
              • Library Service is a recognised leader in exploiting new technology and developing myBU, a fast-growing virtual learning environment.
              • Specialist labs and facilities include a unique forensics crime house and the UK's only University-based Sony HD TV studio. 
              Students’ Union
              • The Students' Union is the voice for students, providing confidential advice and representation on many issues.
              • The Union is the central hub for clubs, societies and annual balls with award-winning radio, television and print media.
              • It manages shops and bars on both campuses including the student night club, the Old Fire Station.

              Sport
              • In 2008–09 Bournemouth University students represented English Universities in golf and football, and Great Britain internationally in floorball and tchoukball.
              • Some 14 teams – ranging from badminton to tennis – qualified for the knock-out stages of BUSA competition in 2008.
              • Sporting facilities include the Hot Rocks Climbing & Bouldering wall and the University cricket ground.

              Recent/prospective new builds
              • Major new investment in accommodation and academic space will ensure the best environment for personal and professional development.
              • Some 400 new places in student halls opened in the last two years and 400 more will open soon.
              • Major refurbishment to main buildings means added social space and massive improvements to the Bournemouth student experience. 
              Availability of part-time work
              • Tourism is the leading industry in Bournemouth which is reflected in the abundance of part-time jobs available year round.
              • The Students' Union hires many students and employment agencies assist in finding office-based work with hours to suit.
