History
  • Leeds traces its roots as far back as 1831.
  • Awarded a charter by Edward VII in 1904, Leeds is now one of the largest universities in the UK.
Location and Transport
  • Situated close to the UK’s geographical centre.
  • At the centre of the national transport network.
  • Leeds has one of the UK’s major train stations, and is linked to Europe via Leeds Bradford International Airport.

  • Tuition fees (2009): £3,225.
  • Foundation year tuition fee: £1,285; placement year and year abroad tuition fees £860.
  • Targeted scholarship scheme to attract new UK first generation students from low income households including those on access programmes such as Access to Leeds - available to students receiving full Maintenance Grant. The scholarship is instead of the bursary. Worth £3,000.
  • Targeted scholarship scheme to attract students from income backgrounds of £40,000 a year or less, available to those who also demonstrate academic excellence. This scheme is in addition to the bursary. Worth £1,000 a year.
  • Targeted scholarship scheme to attract new UK first generation students from low income households in the Barnsley, Rotherham and Doncaster areas of South Yorkshire. The scholarship is instead of the bursary. Worth £3,000 a year.
  • Targeted subject specific scholarship scheme to attract new UK students from low income households. This scheme is in addition to the bursary. Worth £1,700 a year.
  • Targeted scholarship scheme to attract new UK students from low income households who play sports at a high level. The scholarship is instead of the bursary.  Worth £1,540, plus free gym membership, coaching and other sports related benefits.
  • A range of School/Faculty specific scholarships, highest value scholarship is worth £6,000 over the duration of a 3/4 year course.
  • £8.7 million of additional fee income to be earmarked for bursaries and outreach by 2010-11.

  • Over 2.8 million items in stock, the main library (of three) is one of the largest in the country.

Students’ Union
  • On enrollment, students automatically become member of one of the largest students' union in the country – over 210 activities, clubs and societies.
  • The union has an award-winning newspaper and radio station.

Sport
  • £20-million spending plan is currently in operation to add first class facilities, including a 200 station health and fitness complex and a 25m swimming pool.
  • One of the largest intramural league recreational sport competitions in UK Higher Education in which over 3,000 students participate every year.
  • Support over 70 elite athletes in their academic and sporting lives through the sports scholarship scheme. Current scholars include Paralympic swimming bronze medallist Claire Cashmor.

Recent/prospective new builds
  • The new £5.3-million School of Performance and Cultural Industries building will house a range of cutting-edge facilities.
  • £15 million has been invested in a new student services building. From January 2009 the various student administration sections will be housed together acting as a one-stop shop for students.
  • £20 million is being spent on new buildings for the School of Earth and Environment.
Availability of part-time work
  • Open throughout the year, Joblink is the university’s on-site student employment service, organising part-time work for students during study.
  • Leeds has opportunities for part-time work and work experience for students who want to earn or widen their CV.
