History
  • Glyndwr University formed in July 2008 when the North East Wales Institute of Higher Education (NEWI) gained university status.
  • The university traces its roots to 1887 when the Wrexham School of Science and Arts was formed from miners' Whisky Money, a tax on beer and spirits.
  • Higher education followed in 1892 and three colleges formed NEWI in 1975, before Glyndwr University was created.
Location and Transport
  • The main Wrexham campus is a short walk from Wrexham town centre.
  • The Flintshire campus is set in 91 hectares of landscaped gardens at the Welsh College of Horticulture, accessible by car and bus.
  • Excellent road and rail links connect Wrexham with Manchester and Liverpool in under an hour, and there are direct train services to Cardiff and London.

Accommodation
  • Students can live on campus in the Student Village or Plas Coch Hostel or choose from one of three off-campus accommodation options.
  • All rooms on campus have broadband connections and round-the-clock security.
  • The cost of living on campus – from as little as £53 per week – is one of the lowest in the UK.

Entry standards

  • Usually 200 UCAS points for an honours degree; 100 points for a foundation degree.
  • Those with no formal qualifications are also encouraged to apply.


  • Student mixA bursary of up to £1,000 is offered to all full-time undergraduates (based on three different levels according to family household income).
  • Excellence Scholarships of £1,000 are available for students presenting 300 points and applying through UCAS by the 15 January deadline.
  • Glyndwr University graduates can benefit from a scholarship of £1,000 per annum to study full time on a Masters or PhD programme.
  • All Welsh domiciled students receive a Welsh Assembly Fee Remission Grant of £1,890.
  • Gifted athletes and others may be eligible for a Sports Bursary.
  • In line with Frank Buttle Trust accreditation, a scholarship is available to qualifying care leavers of £1,000 per year of study.

Research standards

  • The university has eight research centres, including the Centre for Applied Internet Research and the Materials Science Research Centre.
  • Three university research groups are based at OpTIC Technium – Polymers, Photovoltaics and a Centre for Modern Optics.
  • The university awards Masters and PhDs of the University of Wales.


Academic strengths
  • The North Wales School of Art and Design has an international reputation for innovation and excellence. Its students have won prestigious D&AD awards and the Macmillan book prize.

  • Voted 'Best in Wales for student satisfaction' (i-Graduate Wales Student Barometer 2007).
  • Shortlisted for the Outstanding Support for Disabled Students award at the 2008 Times Higher Education Awards.

Sport
  • Glyndwr University's sports centre, on the Wrexham campus, is home to a six badminton court-sized sports hall, fitness suite and dance studio.
  • It's also home to the international-standard North Wales Regional Hockey Stadium, plus an all-weather sports pitch.

Recent/prospective new builds
  • A new £3-m Performing Arts and Conference Centre opens early 2009. Facilities include a 320-seat theatre and advanced AV equipment.
  • Work starts soon on a new Design, Technology and Media Centre, purpose built for the creative industries.
  • Both facilities are part of an overall £40-m investment in the campus

Availability of part-time work
  • A wealth of employment opportunities exist in and around Wrexham.
  • There are opportunities to work for the university as Student Ambassadors, engaging with potential and prospective students.
