History

• Founded in Canterbury in 1965.
• Launched new Medway campus in 2005 and University of the Transmanche in 2004, working with four French universities.
• New site for Brussels campus opened in 2006.

Bursaries and Scholarships
In receipt of full Maintenance Grant: £1,000.
In receipt of partial Maintenance Grant: £250–1,000.
Tuition fees (2009): £3,225.

• Placement year and year abroad tuition fees will be approximately £780.
• Twenty Scholarships for Academic Excellence worth £1,000 a year each.
• Forty-four Partner Schools and Colleges Scholarships worth £1,000 a year each.
• Music Scholarships worth £1,000 per year for excellence and commitment to music.
• Sports Scholarships worth £250-£5,000 for excellence and commitment to sport.
• Additional sports scholarships of between £2,000–2,500 per year awarded in partnership with Kent County Cricket Club, Canterbury Rugby Club, Canterbury Mens' and Ladies' Hockey Clubs, and Old Bordenian Mens' Hockey Club.
• A condition of holding a bursary is attendance at a student support programme, e.g. financial counselling.
• Eligibility for bursaries to be assessed using UUK/SLC model bursary scheme (HEBSS).

Course flexibility

• Fully modular degree programmes provide students with the opportunity to study a wide range of options across all.
• Most degree courses include an option of studying abroad, studying in industry or both.
• A vast range of degree combinations are available with joint degrees and major/minor degree subject options on offer to students.

Teaching standards
League Table

• National Teaching Fellowships awarded to Kent staff three years’ running.
• Kent scored 82% for teaching quality in 2006 National Student Survey, ranking 22nd out of 128.

Research standards
League Table

• Over 80% of staff work in departments where research rated as internationally or nationally excellent.
• Research income has risen by over 49% between 2004–05 and 2006–07.
• Seventeen areas (74% of research) submitted by Kent in the 2001 Research Assessment Exercise rated at grade 4 or higher. 

Academic strengths

• Kent has received £16 million in grants towards new teaching and research facilities covering the period 2004–8.
• Academic facilties include 1.3 million books and periodicals, over 2,000 computer terminals, superb laboratories and studios and a learning advisory service.
• Social facilities include cafes, bars, nightclub, theatre and cinema.

Students’ Union

• Kent Union, the students' union at the University of Kent, has around 100 different societies, 40 different sports clubs, a student newspaper and community radio station, plus hundreds of volunteering opportunities.
• Winner of the Best Bar None Awards 2008 for good practices and policies for sensible drinking throughout bars and clubs

Sport

• Canterbury has facilities for over 30 different sports ranging from a dance studio to football pitches and a climbing wall.
• Medway has growing number of sports teams for serious athletes and beginners and co-launched an annual inter-university boat race.
• There are sports scholarships of up to £5,000 a year available to talented sportsmen and sportswomen from all subject areas.

Recent/prospective new builds

• Canterbury developments for 2008 include 540 new study bedrooms, a 480 seat lecture theatre and 6 seminar rooms.
• Ongoing development at the Medway campus, including state-of-the-art new buildings and purpose-built facilities.

Availability of Part-time Work

• Jobshop is Kent Union’s job agency advertising 3,200 vacancies last year. It also gives advice and information on part-time working.
• Plenty of supermarkets, bars and shops in Canterbury.
• Job opportunities in Medway in nearby shopping centres and new ‘Dickens’ World’ theme park.
