History
  • Delivering higher education for 125 years,  when it was the first non-denominational teacher training college for women in 1885.
  • The main campus moved to Ormskirk, 15 miles outside Liverpool, in 1933.
Location and Transport
  • Main campus in Ormskirk and locations across the Northwest and into the west Midlands.
  • A free bus-link between Ormskirk and the campus on presentation of a valid bus pass.
  • The campus is 5 minutes from the M58 by car and 30 minutes from Liverpool and Preston by train.
  • A green travel plan which is set up to help the environment and lower the university’s carbon footprint.
    Accommodation
    • Nineteen halls of residence on the Ormskirk campus, housing up to 671 students in single study bedrooms. An extra 144 bed spaces will be available from September 2009, with new on-campus accommodation currently under construction. 
    • The majority of second and third years live off campus, either with their families or in rented accommodation, where students can expect to pay around £50–£60 per week.

      • Tuition fees (2009–10): £3,225.
      • The university ranks top in the North West, and in the top 10 institutions nationally, for re-investing tuition fees on students, with £1.9m spent on scholarships, bursaries and outreach activities in 2007.
      • Families earning less than £25,000 pa:  £500.
      • Four disadvantaged student bursaries from Helena Kennedy Foundation: £1,000.
      • Entrance Scholarships: £2,000 over 3 years for undergraduates in the areas of creative arts, online, performing arts, sports, volunteering and preparation for higher education.

      • Jesse Jackson Scholarship (new for  2009–10): £1,000.
      • Professor Tanya Byron Scholarship (new for 2009–10): £1,000.

      • Care leavers are awarded an annual bursary: £750.
      • All students liable to pay the variable rate fee (£3,225) receive a £200 a year credit on a UNICARD to be spent at specified retail outlets on course-related materials.

          Teaching standards

          • Commended for Teaching and Learning in every one of the last 5 QAA subject reviews.
          • Faculty of Health: Nursing and Midwifery Council (ex-ENB) combined reviews - highest rated provider in the Northwest Strategic Health Authority in both 1999 (22/24) and 2004 (‘commended' in all cells). In 2008 judged as ‘outstanding' for practice-based learning and ‘good' in all other aspects for our work in Nursing.
          • Faculty of Education - judged ‘outstanding' by OfSTED (2008) in both cells (Quality of Training and Management and Quality Assurance) for all of our work in Primary and Early Years, having previously been the first provider to be awarded a Grade 1 for Management and Quality Assurance across all Key Stages under the new OfSTED framework.   

          Research standards

          • In the 2001 RAE assessment, research in History, Nursing and Midwifery and English Literature and Language gained four-star classifications. 
          Academic strengths
          • Over 300 undergraduate routes to choose from, plus Foundation Degrees, diploma and professional development programmes.
          • Centre of Excellence in Teaching and Learning.
          • As a result of excellent links with employers, 75% of graduates leave with qualifications that have professional recognition.
          • The university is the largest provider of Initial Teacher Training for secondary education in the UK, with the course ranking top in the North West in the latest National Student Survey.

          Student facilities, including Library and Computing

          • Learning Innovation Centre with 200 computers with 24-hour access, TV and radio studios with the latest digital technology, satellite TV facilities and multimedia production.
          • University library contains 250,000 books, journals, audio-visual items and electronic services (including 11,000 electronic journals and 45,000 e-books). A coffee bar available for students to unwind after a hard day of studying.

          Students’ Union
          • The Venue is the on-campus student bar and the hub of student life.
          • A variety of sports teams through the Athletics Union office including football, rugby, hockey, athletics, badminton, tennis, karate, swimming and water polo.
          • Societies include Performance Arts, Alternative Music, Fusion and LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender), Shortcuts Film Society, with students encouraged to set up their own.

            Sport
            • Edge Hill has some of the best sporting facilities in the region. It is the only North West higher education institute to hold the national Inclusive Fitness Initiative Mark accreditation. There is a sports hall and a separate gym on site, as well as squash, tennis, football and much more.
            • Edge Hill has been included within the London 2012 official Pre-Games Training Camp Guide for a number of Olympic and Paralympics sports. The facilities are in use by professional clubs such as Everton FC and St Helens RLFC.

            Recent/prospective new builds
            • £105m invested in the campus in recent years, including £28m in the past year.  This incorporates new buildings for the Faculty of Health and the new Business School.
            • A further £200m to be spent on additional buildings by 2020, which will see the university's footprint double in size.
            Availability of part-time work
            • New students are encouraged to engage with the Careers Centre as soon as possible to take advantage of the wide range of part-time jobs that are on offer through the Job Club. This includes national and international opportunities for the summer, such as working at Wimbledon or Glastonbury, Camp America, Club Med, etc, as well as local jobs.
            • The Careers Centre supports the recruitment needs of employers by offering a free vacancy service for graduate, part-time, summer and volunteering opportunities.
